🌐 Why some ideas only work in certain countries
What works in Dubai may not work elsewhere — and vice versa. When you follow global trends, it can be easy to get the impression that good ideas must work the same everywhere. In reality, however, many projects, companies, or strategies only succeed in specific countries or regions. And Dubai is a great example of a place where some things work completely differently than in most of the world.
The reason is not just economic. Every country has a different environment, culture, mentality, infrastructure, and people’s expectations. What is common in one part of the world may seem impractical or make no sense in another.
Dubai is also very specific in that it is an extremely international city that also operates according to its own rules.

🏙️ Dubai was created very quickly
One reason why some concepts work differently here is the development of the city itself. Dubai has transformed from a relatively small area into a global metropolis in just a few decades. This means that:
- the infrastructure is very modern
- the city was planned more recently than European metropolises
- some systems did not emerge gradually, but “from scratch”
That’s why here, for example:
- there are large master communities
- mega projects are emerging quickly
- it is easier to introduce new technologies
In many older European cities, similar projects would run into historic buildings, regulations, or public opposition.
🚗 Transportation: what works in Europe may not work in Dubai
This is clearly visible in transportation, for example. European cities are often built for walking and dense public transport. Dubai has been mainly oriented towards cars for many years. This affects the way communities are planned, the size of roads, the distances between locations and the daily lives of residents.
Some concepts that work in Amsterdam or Copenhagen, for example, would not be practical in Dubai’s climate or urban planning.
On the contrary, Dubai is very quickly adopting autonomous transportation, smart traffic management, futuristic transportation projects, and major infrastructure changes.
🌡️ Climate changes everything
Climate is one of the most underestimated factors. What works in colder Europe may not work in an environment where temperatures are over 40°C for several months. This affects architecture, people’s movement outdoors, the use of public spaces and the daily routine of the city. For example:
- Large air-conditioned shopping malls are a natural part of life in Dubai
- most activities move indoors in the summer
- the nightlife is much more important than in many European cities
💼 Mentality and speed of decision-making
Dubai is known for its very fast decision-making pace. Some projects that would take ten or fifteen years to develop in Europe are implemented here much faster. This is helped by:
- more centralized management
- growth orientation
- openness to new technologies
- less bureaucracy in some areas
That is why concepts that remain only on paper for a long time elsewhere often work here.
🌍 International population creates a unique environment
More than the majority of Dubai’s population is expatriate. This significantly changes the way the city functions. Dubai is used to people from different cultures, high population mobility, rapid market changes and a global lifestyle.
Some services or projects are therefore designed much more “globally” than locally.
🏗️ Why some concepts work in Dubai
There are projects that would probably never be built outside of Dubai or would not be economically feasible. For example:
- artificial islands
- ultra-luxury branded residences
- gigantic indoor attractions
- urban mega projects like NEOM in the region
Dubai has the combination of capital, demand, tourism and international trade that allows such projects to exist.
⚖️ It doesn’t mean that one is better than the other
It is important to understand that the different functioning of different countries is not about one approach being right and the other being wrong. Each environment has different conditions, a different history, a different culture, and different needs of its inhabitants.
And that is precisely why successful ideas must adapt to local realities.
🧠 What to take away from this
One of the biggest mistakes is to blindly copy models and ideas from other countries without understanding the local environment. This applies to:
- business
- investment
- urban planning
- technology
- everyday life
A successful concept often arises not only because of the idea itself, but mainly because it corresponds to the environment in which it operates.
✨ Summary
Dubai is a perfect example of this:
- The same ideas don’t work the same everywhere.
- Environment influences success more than people think
- culture, climate and infrastructure change the functioning of the city
And that’s why Dubai is so fascinating to many people — because things work here that would seem like science fiction or complete nonsense elsewhere.
